June 28 1968 - The Gun in America
The late 60s marked a whole new era for America. Artists like Andy Warhol (check out our article in this month's issue about Warhol, pop art, and getting shot) and Roy Lichtenstein were heralding the pop art movement, hippies protested, music was life. Unfortunately, two of our nations greatest leaders, Martin Luther King and JFK were shot. In the shadow of such tragedy, panic and radical thoughts were brought on both sides of the fence. Some screamed we should have more guns to protect ourselves. Some screamed let's get rid of the guns. No matter what your stance was, Lichtenstein's painting broadcasted on the cover of Time makes you think.
Ultimately, this cover marks great change. It simply, yet powerfully states that the wild, wild west was gone and the new urban jungle era had begun.

M.I.A. Paper Planes
I LOVE "Paper Planes" from M.I.A.'s 2007 album KALA. It took heat for the gun sounds that repeat throughout the chorus. Haters said she supported terrorism and violence., but MIA was quoted as calling the song a satire on cab drivers . Either way - something about those gun shots just do it for me.

Aerosmith - Janie's Got A Gun, 1989
I remember when this song came out. I thought it was so cool and I was cool for listening to it. I also had absolutely no idea what it was about. Twenty years later, I now understand the meaning (about a girl who is victim to incest and abuse) Now, I don’t condone taking the law into your own hands but hell, he had it coming. I would have aimed lower. --Goldie Glox

As I'm sure the same is true for many of you... The Zapper was one of my first experiences with a gun. It was also my first experience with a shooting video game (DUCK HUNT)!

Believe it or not, I work a day job. And at that day job I have a boss who is very awesome and is a great supporter of femme45.com. She told me about this clip from the June 30th episode of "Better Off Ted" and when I saw it, I definitely couldn't resist sharing it with you guys. Seriously, this bad ass character Veronica (played by Portia de Rossi) is awesome enough to make me start watching this show.

I figure what better way to kick off this film section than with one of my favorite girl and gun movie moments..... The following clip is from the movie CLUE. Clue (1985) is a classic hit loosely based on the board game of the same name. I won't give too much away, but since the ensemble of characters is trying to solve a murder mystery, you can see why tensions are running high. Enjoy.
