Sitting Pretty – How To Get A Job in the Beauty Industry

If you’ve always wanted to work in a job that lets you be creative, work with people and opens up avenues for work all over the world, then the beauty or hair industry may just be for you. A career in the beauty or hairdressing industry is a skill you can take with you anywhere, and it can be versatile, creative, lucrative and enjoyable. It is an industry in which you get to work with people a lot and also one in which you can follow your passions in different directions. There are several business schools that provide training courses for different aspects of the beauty industry, and one of these is the perfect place to begin your career path.

Choosing a Course

First, look around for a course that you’re interested in. Try to think of the type of job you’d like to do when you finish training–would you prefer to be a hairdresser, or perhaps even specialise in doing hair for fashion shows or hair as fashion in itself? Maybe your passion is makeup, and you’d like to try your hand at working in the entertainment or film industry? Then again you could like the beauty therapy side of things, and train in laser hair removal, or waxing or skin treatments? It’s a big, diverse industry and the clearer the idea you have of what you want to do when you’ve finished your course, the easier it will be to select the right one for you. If you’re unsure, start off with a more generic course that gives you a taste of everything and then decide where your interest and skill lie!

Getting Started

Once you’ve got your qualifications, you’ll need to find a job somewhere that you can learn more on the job. Hairdressers take on apprentices and these apprentices usually start with small amounts of responsibility and then move their way up as they become more experienced. They may start by doing small tasks like sweeping hair or shampooing, and then gradually work their way up to trims, colours and then full-on highlights and style cuts when they’re confident enough. Being in a hairdresser’s shop or beauty salon is invaluable experience for the novice, as it teaches them through observation the dos and don’ts of the trade and allows them to learn from the example of more experienced workers.

Making Yourself Stand Out

In order to rise through the ranks more quickly as a beauty or hair professional, it’s a good idea to try and give yourself as much of an edge as possible when it comes to your qualifications. A business management course is an excellent way to give yourself a competitive advantage as this puts you in mind for a management position as well. A course in business management could even help you achieve your dream of working for yourself, and you could eventually open your own shop or salon and maximise your profits and autonomy.

If you’re thinking about entering the beauty industry, make sure you educate yourself as to all the different options and opportunities available, to ensure you take full advantage of the exciting new career ahead of you!
