Hairdressers take on apprentices and these apprentices usually start with small amounts of responsibility and then move their way up as they become more experienced. They may start by doing small tasks like sweeping hair or shampooing, and then gradually work their way up to trims, colours and then full-on highlights and style cuts when they’re confident enough. Being in a hairdresser’s shop or beauty salon is invaluable experience for the novice, as it teaches them through observation the dos and don’ts of the trade and allows them to learn from the example of more experienced workers.

Making Yourself Stand Out

In order to rise through the ranks more quickly as a beauty or hair professional, it’s a good idea to try and give yourself as much of an edge as possible when it comes to your qualifications. A business management course is an excellent way to give yourself a competitive advantage as this puts you in mind for a management position as well. A course in business management could even help you achieve your dream of working for yourself, and you could eventually open your own shop or salon and maximise your profits and autonomy.
